LCU - Orthognathic Surgery

Repositioning the upper or lower jaw to correct facial disproportion, malocclusion (bad bite), or functional issues with chewing, speaking, and breathing

The surgery is carried out as part of the overall treatment. It is extremely important that the surgeon is able work closely with the orthodontist. The initial assessment is usually carried out by the orthodontist following which an overall treatment plan is agreed by the patient, orthodontist and surgeon to specifically attempt to answer the patients concerns with a lasting result.

Sometimes it is possible to carry out surgery first. However, the usual approach is for the orthodontist to correct the position the teeth in the individual jaws first with braces. This usually takes 18 months and allows teeth to meet in a good position when the surgery is performed, Following the surgery a further short course of orthodontics is usually required to fine tune the bite.

The surgery is carried out through incision in the mouth so that there are no external scars. Most of my patients are treated as day cases, some stay in hospital for 1 night if required.

Surgery can be carried out on the top (Le Fort 1) or bottom jaw (BSSO) or both (Bimaxillary Osteotomy). The chin point can also be repositioned surgically (Genioplasty)

Further information can be obtained from The British Orthodontic Society.
