Professor David Dunaway CBE is a globally recognised consultant plastic and craniofacial surgeon with a distinguished career dedicated to the treatment of complex craniofacial conditions. He is a member. of world-renowned Craniofacial Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and Professor of Craniofacial Surgery at University College London (UCL). Professor Dunaway works within a multidisciplinary team managing a wide range of conditions including craniosynostosis, facial clefts, craniofacial microsomia, neurofibromatosis, skull base tumours, and complex facial trauma. His expertise extends to both paediatric and adult patients, offering staged reconstructive solutions that optimise both function and aesthetics.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to craniofacial surgery and global health, Professor Dunaway was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, reflecting his dedication to advancing craniofacial care in the UK and abroad, including his significant work delivering life-changing surgery to children in underserved communities around the world.
He has also been awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Professor Dunaway is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and an influential figure in international surgical education.
Known for his surgical innovation, he utilises cutting-edge techniques such as virtual surgical planning, 3D printing, cranial vault remodelling, distraction osteogenesis, and custom implant reconstruction. He is a strong advocate for a holistic, team-based approach, collaborating with neurosurgeons, ENT specialists, ophthalmologists, orthodontists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, and geneticists to provide comprehensive, patient-centred care.
Professor Dunaway is also active in academic research and education, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and frequent speaking engagements at major global conferences. His research interests focus on craniofacial growth, surgical outcomes, and the use of technology in precision surgery.
