What is Lambdoid Craniosynostosis?
Lambdoid craniosynostosis is a rare form of craniosynostosis, a condition where one or more of the skull sutures fuse prematurely. The lambdoid suture runs along the back of the head, connecting the occipital bone with the parietal bones. When this suture fuses too early, it restricts growth in the back of the skull, leading to an asymmetric, flattened appearance on the affected side. This results in a condition known as posterior plagiocephaly. Unlike positional plagiocephaly, which is caused by external pressure on the skull, lambdoid craniosynostosis involves actual bone fusion.
